In this short film for Vogue Scandinavia, Norwegian virtuoso violin talent explores the otherworldly Arctic – the “incredibly mythical, mysterious” north that inspired her latest album.
For the special anniversary edition of Vogue Scandinavia, violinist Elbjørg Hemsing donned designer looks and towering heels in the far flung north of Norway, within the invisible periphery of the Arctic Circle. But the extreme surrounding terrain wasn’t just the striking backdrop to this one-of-a-kind photoshoot, it was also the inspiration for her latest album, named what else but Arctic.
Recorded with the Arctic Philharmonic in the tiny Norwegian town of Bodø, the album forms part of Hemsing’s lifelong exploration of the Nordic heritage and identity that “profoundly shapes” her artistry. “Nature is everything to me. It’s who we are, how we became ourselves, the source that defines us,” Hemsing says. This sentiment is captured throughout the vast repertoire of the new album, which includes new compositions alongside fresh arrangements of cherished Nordic pieces such as Edvard Grieg.
Watch Hemsing, captured in sacred moments amid the jagged peaks, blankets of ice and truly unique natural elements of the Arctic.
