Do your old dust bags deserve a second chance? Unlock their potential with our DIY guide to transform neglected shoe (and bag) dust bags into a fashion-forward fabric screen wall, just like we did here at the Vogue Scandinavia office
Here at Vogue Scandinavia, we love a good upcycle project. When decorating our new forever office, we had the thought to transform our many, many unused dust bags from the likes of Gucci, Chanel and Louis Vuitton into a fashion-forward fabric screen. It currently sits, fittingly, in our fashion room and also doubles as a handy changing screen when we have fittings here in the office.
Below, we break down how to create a dust bag fabric screen of your own.
What you'll need
- Old shoe and purse dust bags
- Sewing machine and thread
- Iron
- Scissors
- Marker
Step one: collect your dust bags
Gather old dust bags in various sizes, ensuring they are clean and in good condition. The variety in size and colour will add visual interest to your fabric screen.
Step 2: Cut and arrange
Cut assorted fabric into strips of varying lengths and widths. Experiment with different colors and patterns to create a visually appealing patchwork effect.
Step 3: Trim Excess Fabric
Trim any excess fabric from the edges of the dust bags to create a neat and cohesive look. This step adds a polished finish to your fabric screen.
Step 4: Arrange and Sew Panels
Lay out your dust bags and sew them together to create larger panels. This step helps in constructing a seamless fabric screen.
Step 5: Iron the Fabric
Iron the sewn panels to create a flat fabric effect. This ensures that there isn't an uneven appearance to the stitches.
Step 6: Install the Fabric Screen Wall
Mount the fabric screen onto the wall at your preferred height. This step completes the transformation, turning your old shoe bags into a functional and beautifully sewn fabric screen wall.
