A bronzer's tawny pigments make dull skin glow no matter what the time of year. But in summer it's an essential topcoat for breathing fresh life into your tan.
True, bronzer can add soft definition to the face. But one of the biggest mistakes people make is using it in the same way as a contouring powder to carve out cheekbones. Typically, contouring powder has cool grey undertones to mimic the shadows on your face – bronzer recreates the sun’s warmth on the skin.
Likewise a matte powder is best for a second-skin look – not to mention skipping the all-over application as this can make skin look flat. “Brush horizontally under the eyes and across the cheeks rather than following the line of your cheekbones,” advises renowned make-up artist andVogue Scandinavia’s beauty expert, Gucci Westman. “It looks more authentic and it’s also more youthful as that’s where young children catch the sun outdoors.” Just be sure to stop buffing before you reach the bottom of your cheekbones. A sweep of bronzer across the bridge of the nose and around the hairline adds a lustrous finish to the look.
Westman’s product of choice is her Westman Atelier Beauty Butter Powder Bronzer in Coup de Soleil, named so on account of its buttery texture. That said, her application tip is equally applicable if you prefer a cream bronzer such as Glossier’s new Solar Paint or Chanel’s best-selling Les Beiges Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream, which now comes in the Soleil Tan Deep Bronze shade to lend darker skin tones a sun-kissed glow in seconds.
Finally, remember to always use a light hand when applying bronzer. Only go one or two shades darker than your natural complexion and build up the colour in soft layers.
Best bronzers for light skin tones
Lily-white skin lacks yellow undertones so a bronzer that is too golden will cast an orange hue. Instead, opt for a bronzer with beige undertones to add just a hint of warm colour.

Best bronzers for medium skin tones
A warm, rosy-hued bronzer will elevate your glow and counteract any sallowness. Avoid large specks of shimmer at all costs as it can make skin look ashy.
