Get to know Frederikke Thiberg, the creative mind behind the statement jewellery piece that is more than just a heart necklace. And Emili Sindlev and Maya Stepper are already fans...

Wearing your heart on your sleeve has been taken to the next level. Wearing a chunky, silver heart on your chest is the way to go according to Copenhagen brand The Good Statement – and renowned tastemakers like Mathilde Gøhler, Emili Sindlev, Camille Charrière, and Maya Stepper agree.

They were among the trendsetters seen sporting The Good Statement's cord necklace with a larger-than-life, bold-yet-refined silver heart around their necks. And now, perhaps unsurprisingly, the independent Scandinavian brand has been inundated with orders.

It was the sort of advertising such small firms can often only dream of – and not bad for a company that wasn't even founded with jewellery in mind. “When I launched the brand, statement T-shirts were very much a thing, but I thought the statements were missing some edge and foremost a deeper meaning,” says Frederikke Thiberg, who began The Good Statement six years ago at the age of 17. After creating several clothing collections, Thiberg was inspired by a piece of jewellery that led to her necklace collection called ‘Spirit’, based on a memory from her youth.

“I was inspired by a unique heart pendant that I bought on a vacation. It somehow reminded me of those heart-shaped friendship necklaces that you would get as a child,” Thiberg explains. “The symbol made me think of the mood rings from toy vending machines. They would change colours as you wore them and have different kinds of symbols on them like butterflies, stars, rounds, and hearts. I liked the idea of necklaces that reflect the spirit of the different symbols which have a different meaning for everyone.”

As the heart is known as a feminine symbol, Thiberg wanted it to be chunkier and to make a bold statement rather than making a cute, dainty piece. But it also contains a deeper meaning. “The heart is the symbol of love. It could either be the love for or from someone else but for me it stands for loving yourself. I chose this specific bold shape because I wanted it to reflect a bold heart – to live and love boldly without holding back.”

Whether people are attracted by this statement or simply enjoy the bold aesthetic of it, the necklace has since gone viral on Instagram. “Seeing a person on the street wearing my necklace means the world to me,” says Thiberg. “I like that everyone can interpret the statement differently and it can become part of their own ideas and vision.”

So what can we expect from the brand in the future? “People often tell me I have the Pippi [Långstrump] mentality: ‘I haven’t tried it before so I’m probably good at it’,” states Thiberg. “That’s exactly how I approach the process for The Good Statement. I never create something thinking ‘this could sell very well’. Everything I make comes from a very personal place, regardless of whether it will appeal to many or just a few. Hopefully, I can continue to contribute a tiny bit to create designs that speak to people. That, I suppose, is my ultimate goal.”
