Swedish designer Mikaela Mårtensson is the perfect accompaniment to Måneskin as they glam-rock this European festival season

When Måneskin first graced our screens during Eurovision 2021, Nordic audiences certainly weren’t the only ones to fall head over heels. Yet the Italian rock band – with its Danish name and half-Danish bassist – has always found a way to make us Scandis feel special – especially as they rocked our festival circuit this summer with show-stopping performances at Stockholm's Lollapolooza and Oslo's Tons of Rock.

However, this summer’s Måneskin–Scandi affair doesn’t just stop there. Playing in Poland and Italy, band members sported pieces by one of Sweden’s up-and-coming designers, Mikaela Mårtensson. Like all great love stories, the dalliance began with an Instagram DM.

An extension of her studies at the Swedish School of Textiles, Mårtensson’s knitted and crocheted pieces are a perfect match for the musicians, who are no strangers to showing some skin. Channeling Måneskin’s trademark cocktail of glam-rock sex appeal, bassist Victoria De Angelis and drummer Ethan Torchio rocked Mårtensson’s black Slither Top and pink Chain Mail Top (respectively), as they paired the pieces with little more than pure charisma.

Describing her aesthetic as ‘a divergence between a girly girl who wants to dress as a princess in a big gown and a punk girl who wants to revolt,’ Mårtensson’s designs take inspiration from the past, re-imagined with a futuristic edge. Through Mårtensson’s distinctive crochet and knit style, the pieces refuse the staticness of a “completed” garment. So, it makes sense that Måneskin’s electric performances bring these pieces to life, as Mårtensson explains to us how the ‘music is an element that gives the clothes more attitude.’

Praising the band’s undeniable magnetism, the young Swedish designer tells us ‘I wish I was as cool as they are.’ Yet, with the Måneskin stamp of approval, it’s safe to say she’s already there.
