All the spectacular accessories moments from fashion month

By Sandra Hagelstam

From diamond bags to denim boots, our shoes and handbag expert Sandra Hagelstam lists the coming season's most coveted

The accessories from another action-packed fashion month were whimsical and quirky, pushing the envelope on the idea of what handbags and heels can be. Pastels and bright pantones ruled the colour scheme, with the footwear focusing on 3D flowers, crayon crystals and trompe l’oeil embellishments. A celebration of craftsmanship and heritage had a lot of designers channelling previous signature silhouettes, from denim boots at Jimmy Choo to a star-studded 25th-anniversary celebration of Fendi’s Baguette handbag.

Fendi’s star-studded Baguette 25th anniversary

The stars came out for Fendi’s special Resort 2023 show during NYFW, with a guest list that included Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Kardashian and Kate Moss, to name a few. Dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the iconic Baguette bag, Silvia Venturini Fendi tapped Marc Jacobs, Tiffany & Co., and Japanese brand Porter to portray their own versions of the famed bag. That included everything from diamond-studded Baguettes to miniatures of the classic purse worn as anklets. To kick off the show, a memorable Sarah Jessica Parker capsule paid homage to Carrie Bradshaw’s dedication to the ‘it’s not a bag, it’s a Baguette’ SATC moment.

Loewe’s tangible fantasy footwear

For a few seasons, JW Anderson’s creative take on the accessories at Loewe has been a viral hit, and the SS23 collection was no exception. Continuing to play on minimalistic silhouettes with a surrealist twist, for the season to come, there were tropical flowers, inflated shapes and rubber balloons that enthusiastically translated to shoes. Minimal straps and delicate feminine design details balanced sophistication and a playful artsiness in a way that has grown to become distinctively Loewe.

Christian Louboutin took over the Eiffel Tower

Leave it to Christian Louboutin to stage the most spectacular presentation of PFW. Showcasing their SS23 collection of shoes and bags in the iconic Eiffel Tower, the focus was heavily on the lipstick heel that launched in September and is featured on some of the Maison’s most iconic styles. Besides the lipstick heel taking new, further forms for the upcoming season, the golden-heeled shoes were part of displays that included the busy steps of Pont Alexandre III in the heart of Paris.

Supersized icons at Louis Vuitton

To say that the season's bags were whimsical is an understatement in the case of Louis Vuitton. The supersized show surreally played with proportions in the form of XL zippers and exaggerated silhouettes. The bags took on supersized luggage tags, and the signature hardware blew up to gigantic top-handle bags. Even the classic leather bags were massively oversized, so prepare for a summer filled with big bag energy.

Denim makes a comeback

It’s been a while since denim was competing with leather in the accessory department, but for SS23, that’s precisely what we are up for. Emphasising the notion of Y2K nostalgia, Jimmy Choo’s strong denim focus showcased a range of both new and classic styles draped in baby blue denim, a finish that was a strong focus in both the bags and shoes. Likewise, Diesel, whose DNA is rooted in the stuff, showed a range of pointed toe denim shoes that was a seamless extension to the hyped nostalgia streetwear trend that the youth-focused brand has been spearheading for seasons.

Under the sea with Roger Vivier

The always opulent presentation of Roger Vivier took a different turn this season in the form of a ‘Maison Vivier’. The refined take on the display of craftsmanship felt grown up, reflecting the French Maison’s legendary values through a showcase of their artisans, last makers and embroiderers. On a more playful note, the iconic Viv’ Choc bag collection channelled the upcoming Little Mermaid remake. Displayed amongst colourful fantasy flower adornments and accompanied by Ariel’s theme song, the colours and crystals of the collection drew inspiration from the mystical life under the sea.
