From Eiza González to Gigi Hadid, these are the biggest celebrity updates from the past 12 months

2022 saw many lightening up, whether in the form of a prematurely silvered or platinum mane, an individualised chop, or a turn toward the sort of playful funk that transmutes a makeover into a subversive statement. Together, the transformations tell a story of forward motion, another step toward the want of idiosyncrasy that is fast becoming beauty’s rule rather than its exception.

Copper continued its reign of colour, with the likes of Kendall Jenner, Hari Nef, Lucy Boynton, and Tessa Thompson channeling fiery personality traits into a rainbow of red that met (or rather, defined) the moment. Aubrey Plaza and Gigi Hadid went blonde, while Dua Lipa and Sydney Sweeney chose to explore life on the darker side. And going trompe l’oeil gray found a new advocate in Julia Fox, who carried off the colour with her signature brand of rebellion.

Cuts eschewed convention in favour of anything but—think Iris Law’s contrast-coloured mullet, Kristen Stewart’s modish take on the wolf cut, and Natasha Lyonne’s entirely ’80s shag. Finally, Doja Cat heralded the potential return of 2017’s obsession with the ever-enduring platinum buzz cut, the perfect balance of grunge and rebellion.
