Norwegian model Jennifer Bårthen lets Vogue Scandinavia into the secret of her beauty routine: simplicity

When it comes to her beauty routine, Norwegian model Jennifer Bårthen likes to keep things simple. For years, she has stayed true to a skincare regime handpicked for her by her dermatologist and frankly, her skin has never looked better. “In the morning I start off with CeraVe hydrating cleanser, then twice a week I follow up with Dermalogica multivitamin thermafoliant,” she tells Vogue Scandinavia.

When she’s fresh out of the shower, she reaches for her bottle of Dermalogica Powerbright Dark Spot Serum or Biolumin-C Serum, both of which are known for their antioxidant benefits and powers to diminish uneven pigmentation.

“I follow up with SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective or C E ferulic,” Bårthen says. “Then I go in with Nimue’s Sun-C SPF 40,” she adds, noting that sunscreen is pivotal no matter the season.

Now in her 40s, Bårthen started using these products at the age of 36, making the odd addition based on recommendations from firneds, or if she happens to stumble across any other interesting beauty offerings. “At times, I like to add fun products like toners and other harmless products like Niactil. During the winter I add more moisture into my routine as the cold climate is drying on the skin. I like using Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented toner and Dr. Ceuracle Vegan Kombucha Tea Essence before I apply my day cream.”

Working in the modelling industry, Bårthen is tapped into all about the latest trends and treatments in the world of beauty. But she is not particularly interested in experimenting with whatever the latest promise to look perfect may be. “I only use products that give me a good feel and are not tested on animals,” she says. “When I was young, I have to admit I did put toothpaste on my zits [a common teenage trend for banishing spots, though it’s more of a high school myth than a dermatologist-approved method]. Today, I stick to my routine and do my best to get enough sleep and water and to do a cleanse before going to bed. As long as I feel comfortable with my no makeup game face I’m doing good.”

Naturally, this means that like anyone who takes pride in a healthy and consistent beauty regimen, there are a few products Bårthen carries with her on the go. A glimpse inside her bag will reveal Tom Ford’s Hyaluronic mist, La Roche Posay’s Anthelios 50+ and Cicaplast Baume B5, and Burt’s Bees’ Bees Wax lip balm, no matter where she’s headed.

As for her best beauty advice? Stick to what works for you. “If your routine works, don’t change it," she says. "And always go see a dermatologist before experimenting your face off.”
