With eyelet lace and Indian influences, Skall Studio was all about returning to its roots for the brand's spring/summer 2023 runway
“There’s always a little bit of Beatles in India,” the Skall sisters said of their eponymous brand ahead of Copenhagen Fashion Week. Launched in 2013, on the heels of co-founder Julie Skall returning to Copenhagen after some time spent in India, it seemed only natural to draw inspiration from the place. “It is ten years ago since we went to India for the first time and became fascinated with the country,” the duo explains. “The smell, the sounds, the way of living and the spirituality, which is a natural part of everyday life.”
More specifically, the Skall sisters have found their inspiration in one of the country's biggest style icons, the former Indian princess of Jaipur Maharani Gayatri Devi. “With her Indian yet western and feminine yet masculine style, we feel she represents the Skall Studio DNA in the most beautiful way,” they say. One aspect the sisters are especially excited about is the new colour scheme, imbuing their typically muted collections with natural dyes. “The Pink City in Jaipur, known for its beautiful pink buildings, has been a great source of inspiration which can be seen in our choice of dusty rose as well as on rose stripes and small flower print,” the sisters say. Beyond the pink, there are colours taken from Indian plants, like acacia brown, extracted from the bark of acacia, and natural indigo, which can be found on Skall Studio signatures such as Nadja Dress and Edgar shirt and trousers.
Another recent addition to the Skall Studio line-up is the expansion of its outerwear category. “Last season, we started to focus even more on outerwear, including functional outerwear, so that we now have outerwear for different occasions,” the sisters say. “We like to stay in the city as well as on the countryside, and we wanted our collection to reflect this.” The sisters have taken the traditional parka and added detachable sleeves for this coming season, elevating the already versatile piece. “We like the idea of styles that can suit different needs, which makes it easier to minimise the wardrobe,” the duo explains.
