As the beloved ABBA singer celebrates her 73rd birthday, we take a trip down fashion’s memory lane and revisit her standout style moments

Like many others of the supergroup ABBA, Fältskog has become an enduring style icon. Aside from smash hits such as ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!’, the band is known for their bodacious ensembles, which, in the group’s heyday back in the 1970s, perfectly captured the era’s funky fashion.

Sleek catsuits, bell bottom jeans, sky-high platform boots and lots (and lots) of sparkle populated Fältskog’s wardrobe during the band’s golden era, and even decades on, Fältskog still hasn’t lost her groove.

At one of ABBA’s performances in the early 1970s, Fältskog emerged sporting one of her most memorable and quintessential ’70s ensembles: a white lace-up jumpsuit with embroidered detailing. Fältskog’s look was definitely disco-ready.

Posing for a group shot with the rest of the ABBA members in 1974 in Copenhagen, Fältskog embraced the flower power aesthetic with a matching set of embroidered flares and a denim vest, coupled with a long-sleeved top. A favourite of Fältskog’s, the boho ensemble was seen again and again over the years, such as when the band toured London.

During a performance on chart show Top of the Pops in 1974, Fältskog opted for a charming, bubblegum pink jumpsuit complete with a heart-shaped keyhole cut-out, paired with chunky silver platform boots. Fältskog’s dolly girl look made waves at the time and remains one of our favourite ABBA looks of all time.

Co-ordinated get-ups were ABBA’s thing, and this 1975 picture proves how potent these looks could be. Wearing a micro-mini dress emblazoned with an animal motif and paired with matching knee-high boots, Fältskog’s crisp white look was perfectly synchronised with her bandmates. These playful outfits, imagined by Swedish designer Owe Sandström, have since become legendary, and ABBA admitted that they often donned extravagant and gaudy ensembles to avoid tax in Sweden (the law allowed the cost of costumes to be deducted against tax).

Owe Sandström created many iconic looks for the band, but one that really stands out is Fältskog’s white spandex catsuit with purple and blue stripes, worn during ABBA’s 1979 tour of Europe and North America. Sandström designed several matching catsuits for all of the members, arriving in different colourways and designs.

For a 1977 performance in Germany, both Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad sported another much-loved 1970s trend: tie-dye. Wearing matching frilled dresses – Fältskog in pink and Lyngstad in mauve – and black platform boots, both women looked effortlessly cool, embracing the era’s ultra-popular boho style.

Captured in Paris in 1983, a year after ABBA separated for a short while, Fältskog embraced a timeless, less flamboyant look than what most of her fans were used to. Wearing a trouser and waistcoat set, paired with a simple white blouse, Fältskog showed her sartorial range, looking as good sporting tailored minimalism as she did in a spandex catsuit.

At an ABBA tribute show at London’s famed G-A-Y nightclub in 2013, Fältskog went all out with her sparkly black sequin leggings (a nod to her earlier band years) combined with a simple, but chic blazer and a white blouse. This special performance, and indeed outfit, proves that Fältskog remains a master of style.

Attending the first ABBA Voyage concert at London’s ABBA Arena in 2022, the whole group were back and on the red carpet together. In a nod to the all-white ensembles the band mates used to sport back in the day, Fältskog and Lyngstad leaned into a bit of co-ordination once again. Fältskog looked every bit in her prime in a luxe, long chiffon dress and sharp, tailored coat.
