Earlier this year, Tove Lo was one of the extra special guest judges on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars: Winners. Even though she wore a cake as millinery, it was RuPaul's pronunciation of the pop star's name that caused waves around the world.
Tove Lo is one of Sweden's biggest pop stars, having dominated the charts with her dark pop records for the last decade. This week, she had the highest honour of being one of the extra special guest judges on the year's most exciting season of RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars, featuring only the series' past winners.
To mark the occasion, Tove Lo wore one of her most iconic looks to date, styled by LA-based stylists and visionaries Annie & Hanna. They chose a Marie Antoinette-inspired mini-dress, knee-high-heeled boots, and a helmet with a purple cake on top. The perfect look for RuPaul's judge's panel, with a literal cherry on top.
A night that was only supposed to be about Tove's impeccable fashion choices has instead become a viral moment that has echoed around the world. During RuPaul's announcement of Tove Lo's presence in the studio, RuPaul actually pronounced Swedish Tove's name correctly.
What has been a mystery for non-Swedish speaking nations since Tove Lo's debut on the Billboard charts in 2014 is now officially debunked. Thanks to RuPaul, we now all know the English pronunciation to be Tov-AY L-ou.
Even though this is not news to us Scandinavians (nor Tove), it is a relief that the United States and beyond that are all on the same page when referring to the pop star. Come Tove Lo's next album cycle, we will now all be pronouncing her name correctly as she rises through the charts once more.
