Having an icon like Rihanna wearing one of your pieces – on the cover of Vogue, no less – is undoubtedly a defining moment for any designer. The latest label to enjoy this honour is Swedish Avavav, whose viral Post-it note jacket from the brand’s spring/summer ’24 collection Rihanna dons on the cover of the latest issue of Vogue China, accessorised with a glimpse of its Triple Rolex necklace.

“It’s a dream, super super fun,” says the Avavav’s creative director Beate Karlsson. “It’s a milestone for us – we’ve dreamed about this opportunity. It doesn’t get much bigger than Rihanna. The whole team are huge fans, and especially our PR rep who handled the pull."

Dubbed ‘No Time to Design, No Time to Explain’, Avavav’s spring/summer '24 spectacle, which saw models scrambling down the runway, delved into an all-too-familiar topic within the fashion industry: time constraints, which can sometimes be chaotic. “A part of the inspiration for the showpieces was using things that already existed in the office and could be made quickly,” Karlsson explains. “I found these old Post-it costumes online that were funny, and we decided to include it in the show.”

While creating the look, which included trousers crafted from Post-it notes as well, was “pretty straightforward,” the most time-consuming part of the process was sewing down all the Post-its and ensuring that they wouldn’t fall off, which Karlsson says “was a bit tricky.” But it was all worth the effort, with the Post-it note jacket perfectly reflecting Rihanna’s bold and boundary-pushing sense of style.
