Video: Vogue Scandinavia pays tribute to every shade of red hair

In this exclusive beauty editorial and video, we decided to honour, highlight and uplift the rarest of natural hair colours, in every shade, form, size and format

Picture for a moment the colour of the sun right before it sets, the tone of the blood that runs through our veins, and the shade of blush that covers your cheeks when the right person says just the right thing. Envision for a moment the vibrancy of the oranges almost past ripe, the hot-headed bell peppers ready to be harvested and swish of the cardinal as it flies past a frozen field. Take the colour of the warmest of spices and the most precious of metals, take the hue of the stars and the colour of molten lava out of an exploding volcano. Call it bronze, auburn, orange, burnt ochre or even maroon — at the end of the day it’s red. It’s all red. And that's what we celebrate in this photo shoot and video.

Less than two percent of the world population is naturally blessed with red hair, they’re few, scarce and some even say they’re going extinct. Throughout the lands where the light of blonde, the calm of brown and the dark of black is genetically consuming them, every once in a while, a star shines upon a child and they’re born with a vibrant, auburn halo.

Unfortunately, because man is afraid of what is different and society has constricted us into idealising an overall egalitarian aesthetic, when something isn’t what it should be, when something isn’t as it normally is, society strikes back with emotional arrows and stereotypical bullets. That in turn makes these gorgeous humans, just like the butterfly, who can’t see its own wings and appreciate the beauty it beholds, to see past the beauty that was once bestowed upon them.

Now, just because the butterfly can’t see it’s own wings that doesn't stop the artist and the sculptor from capturing it’s beauty and essence for years to come. From the darkest of reds to the brightest of auburns we took each shade, we took each colour and through the skilled hands of a hair carver we created and molded crowns to place on the head of those who deserve the recognition and the praise. Crowns made red, crowns in red.

It doesn’t matter the backstory, it doesn’t matter the shade or hue — all that matters is red. Call it tiara, call it halo, call it crown, it’s the perfect symbol and recognition. This is for those who saw themselves in the mirror and didn’t see themselves within the rest, for those who at some point wished their hair was darker, brighter or anything else than red. This is for you, because you’re beautiful, you’re perfect, you’re red.
