The up-and-coming brand joins the Danish line-up for the first time drawing inspiration from the power of motherhood
For most co-founders it would be challenging to work and live in two separate countries, away from your 'other half'. But for OpéraSPORT’s Awa Malina Stelter and Stephanie Gundelach, inspiration comes from the two separate cities they find themselves in: Stephanie in Paris and Awa in Copenhagen. And the fashion world is all the more better for it as demonstrated today, their very first Copenhagen fashion week show. “The similarities and the contrasts. It lies deep in our DNA,” they explained to Vogue Scandinavia.
For their new collection, Edition 12, presented amongst the majestic marble figurines of the city's Royal Cast Collection – a playful setting amidst copies of the world's most iconic sculptures; the Statue of Liberty's hand being one – the pair used a colour palette of sunset-style array of pinks and orange hues.
Their designs drew inspiration from their own personal life experiences of becoming mothers, and the joy and challenge that comes with it. None so evident in the SS23 collection highlight, a special print depicting a madonna with child which caught our eye. “We looked through our archives and came across a photo of a beautiful sculpture that shows a mother and a small child,” explained the women.
“It immediately touched our hearts as it symbolises the place we both are in life: as mothers of small children – the love, the happiness and the chaos. We really want to pay a tribute to the female body in all ages, shapes and sizes.”
Tie-front cut-out knitted dresses, chain belts and sheer puff sleeve blouses with leather detailing brought an added feeling of toughness to the other softer designs, while the grey metallic quilted suit, ideal for that post-conference boogie, was a definite standout.
Working on this collection in between feeding and lulling new borns off to sleep, the pair beavered away together almost entirely through Zoom. But proof is in the pudding – and if the ruched crop tops, pink quilted shell bags and long leather trenches are anything to go by, we’d say agile working certainly suits them.
