Equal parts jewellery and timepiece, the evening watch is one to, well, watch. Emerging artist Nasra Rashiid collages these sparkling sets for our special anniversary Aug - Sept issue as Vogue Scandinavia's editor-in-chief Martina Bonnier explains precisely why they should be on your radar:
The evening watch makes a dazzling comeback this season as the world of High Jewellery hones in on this bracelet-meets-wristwatch this season. Delicate, decadent and meticulously realised, these extraordinary timepieces – complete with their diamonds and stones – are poised to accessorise your finest evening attire come autumn. "When it comes to the size of watches, for a long time women have borrowed from men with larger sized timepieces being in fashion," says Martina Bonnier, Vogue Scandinavia's editor-in-chief and the stylist for this specific feature. "So it is refreshing seeing the return of the evening watch."
Below, peruse some of the industry's most iconic bejewelled pieces paired with the season’s most extravagant earrings for unadulterated drama.

Bvlgari's Serpenti watch with Dior Joaillerie earrings
Bulgari's Serpenti watches have become a true icon for the brand in tribute to its spirit animal. The slim snake clad with emeralds and diamonds slithers up the wrist and coils around the arm to reveal a watch-face in its head – the distinctive sinuosity of its movements is a testament to the ingenuity of its design. "The Dior Joaillerie piece is from one of my favourite collections by creative director Victoire de Castellane," says Bonnier. Boasting the air of a poison flower, the Milly Carnivora pairs perfectly with the "danger" of the Bvlgari Serpenti "as if plucked from the garden of Eden," she says.

The Crazy Flower watch by Breguet with ruby earrings by Garrard
Set with almost 200 diamond-clad petals, the Crazy Flower Full Baguette Reine de Naples wristwatch by Breuget is the make of exuberant evening watch dreams. Inspired by a watch that Breguet made in 1812 for Caroline Murat, the Queen of Naples and sister of Napoleon Bonaparte, historians believe the original Reine de Naples was the first wristwatch ever made for a woman. With a similarly rich history, the diamond earrings with rubies "dropping like cherries" by London-based jeweller Garrard (founded in 1735) pairs perfectly with the sparkling egg-shaped watch. "It is the essence of elegance," says Bonnier.

The Snowflake Fleurette watch by Van Cleef & Arpels paired with drop pearl earrings
Ever since the Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in 1906, diamonds have been central to the Maison's creations. The Snowflake High Jewelry set was created in in 1986 to highlight this precious stone and give a figurative interpretation of Snowflake collection with a feminine bracelet made of Fleurette motifs. "It is the type of watch that comes to mind when you think about an evening watch: the shape and the diamonds," says Bonnier, "the definition of a timeless timepiece. And that's why I decided to pair it with the drop pearl earrings, another true jewellery classic."

Tiffany 25mm square watch with rose gold earring by Rare Jewelery
Founded in New York City in 1837 as a "stationery and fancy goods emporium", Tiffany & Co. (initially Tiffany, Young & Ellis) began selling watches in 1847. The square watch (sized 27mm for men) was released to celebrate the brand's 180th anniversary, inspired directly by one of the New York retailer’s square timepieces from the 1920s, but the company doesn’t provide a specific example. The 25mm version, with a baguette diamond dial and a twisted band of rose gold, has a sparkling appeal transforming the square timepiece into an evening watch. "The rose gold is what particularly drew me to the Tiffany timepiece," says Bonnier. "And the rose quarts in the Rare earring worked wonderfully to complement the watch."

Piaget's Limelight Gala watch has an undeniable air of sophistication. Blending art, design and jewellery, they have exuded a bold femininity ever since the very first version was released in the 1970s. The elongated, asymmetrical lugs wrap around the curved cases, with rounded lines a signature set with progressively cut precious stones. "The Limelight Gala is one of my personal favourites and the newest version comes with emeralds, which are very much on trend at the moment," says Bonnier. "Which can be found echoed in the prasolite drop earring from Strömdahl's Juveler."

Kelly padlock watch with Tiffany & Co by Schlumberger clip earrings
Jean Schlumberger’s visionary creations are among the world’s most intricate designs. Inspired by nature’s beauty and his own background in textiles, Schlumberger's distinctive design aesthetic and vivid imagination have united in some of the world’s most incredible jewellery pieces. Illuminated by brilliant diamonds, this timeless design makes a striking statement. "These earrings are very typical of his designs," says Bonnier. "The diamonds dotting the sun ray shape." In a way, the earring works so well with Hermès' iconic Kelly padlock wristwatch as they're both "true investment pieces" according to Bonnier.
