Get ready for your close-up – be it by Zoom, selfie or, gasp, IRL – in the season’s loudest accoutrements

Asymmetric earrings that sparkle as they swing, headscarves, shades and the almighty statement necklace. One of the major movements in the fashion industry for the spring/summer season was in favour of eye-catching accessories. Be it colour – with vivid highlighter hues on everything from eyewear to over-the-top earrings – or pure size in the form of chunky chains and XXL sunnies, the major Maisons put on a united front when presenting the subtle shifts in our bijoux wardrobes for spring.

For Vogue Scandinavia's February-March issue we called on Stockholm-based artist Anjini Maxwell, who prefers to render her kaleidoscopic creations in markers and watercolour, to capture some of the best accessory moments of SS22. The result were illustrations that need no filter.

Versace

At Versace, volume was everything. In a showcase of the Italian brand's best hits, we saw young and playful basketball silks to pyjama sets in the archival Medusa print – with a handkerchief top here and a bikini top there. The palette was very Miami Vice, bright and poppy in its vivacious recollection of the 1980s.

But for us, the accessories took centre stage. Silk wrapped hoop earrings and bold eyewear in contrasting colours had us keen for summer heat.

Fendi

Kim Jones caught our attention with his spring/summer collection for Fendi. Against a baseline of sleek silhouettes in muted colours, the assortment of accessories were truly allowed to shine on the runway.

While the silver-toned egg-shaped handbags were arguably the most note-worthy accoutrements of the collection, we found ourselves drawn towards the minimalism seen in clear eyewear and earrings with gold accents, worn with a simple yet effective grey rib-knit.

Giambattista Valli

In the industry, the Giambattista Valli's particular affection for romantic expression – seen in floral dresses and featherweight frills – is a dying breed. Especially when compared with the masses waxing lyrically about 'ugly chic'. However, we considered ourselves hooked upon spotting the feathers and silk of the brand's silk bandana for the new season.

Paired with reflective cat-eye shades, sizeable crystal earrings, and a gold-lined jacquard three-piece skirt suit, we long to tie back our 'dos with these delicate details. Top off with a coral lipstick for the ultimate summer-y effect.

Valentino

Pierpaolo Piccioli peeked our interest with his well-placed juxtaposition at Valentino's spring/summer show. Classic Valentino typology was seen throughout the lineup. Virginal white looks in sheer delicate lace and flower-embroideries recalled Valentino Garavani’s all-white collection of 1968, but was updated with rigid denim, heavy boots and choppy haircuts for 2022.

The stand-out accessory on the runway was the continuous appearance of chunky chain necklaces throughout the collection. The statement links and dark lip lent the look a gothic quality that transcends seasons. We see ourselves sporting this winter white and gold combination over the summer months as well as the autumn to come.
