From baptism to bridal, this love-filled event ticks all the boxes. Here Vogue Scandinavia gets the exclusive look inside fashion designer Søren Le Schmidt and makeup artist Nikoline Barfod Skaarup's big day

Fashion darling Søren Le Schmidt loves a collaboration: the 33-year-old designer teamed up with Danish brands Pilgrim in 2020, and ET AL in 2021, and he’s also flexed his design muscle outside of the fashion world, creating a necklace with jewellery designer, Jane Kønig, and a perfume with Ecooking. But by far his greatest personal collaboration was with his twin sons, Marlon and Mio, at their baptism earlier this month.

“All our friends and family were ready at Marmorkirken [Copenhagen’s grand marble church],” says Le Schmidt. “First the boys’ godmothers and godfathers entered the church with the twins; a few seconds later we [Le Schmidt and his bride, makeup artist and hairstylist Nikoline Barfod Skaarup] walked down the aisle hand in hand. Nobody knew that there was going to be a wedding, too. Everyone whistled and clapped, and the atmosphere throughout the church was filled with joy and love. And surprise.”

Le Schmidt proposed in November last year during a holiday in Dubai. Since then, the couple had discussed wedding dates but with the twins’ baptism approaching, the date practically set itself. Planning and pulling off two significant life events during a pandemic was fairly stress free according to Le Schmidt.

“I am used to planning fashion shows and sticking to time schedules, so I think it went pretty well,” he says. “Since it was a secret and only the two of us knew about it, it was very nice to plan everything on our own.”

Being one of Denmark’s most renowned bridal and red-carpet designers also means deciding what to wear is a cinch. Le Schmidt wore his own design, a tight fitted black suit with flared high-waisted trousers and a black shirt and oversized lapel which was made from the same fabric as Nikoline’s outfit, which he also designed. “She wore an off-white crepe georgette double breasted suit with oversized lapel and heavy pearls as buttons,” he says. “I made the jacket with an open back. Nikoline’s make-up was clean and simple, and she wore Sophie Bille Brahe pearl earrings.” Everything was black and white, including the boys’ attire: custom-made black pants and a crisp white shirt with their names embroidered at the back.

The couple had planned on hosting a party after the ceremony, but COVID intervened. Instead, guests enjoyed a glass of bubbles outside the church, followed by cocktails at Union Local. An intimate dinner with the couple’s parents and the twins’ godparents at the Presidential Suite at the NH Collection hotel was the perfect end to the day.

“Right now we are high on love and also relieved,” says Le Schmidt. “The day had been a secret for a couple of months so it’s nice that we have had this special day with all our beloved friends and family. We can look forward to hosting a summer garden party to celebrate love and life later this year.”
