The Icelandic-American musician's ensemble was collaboratively designed finished with meaningful personal details, like the notes of a Bach fugue embroidered on her veil
It’s safe to say that the past few years have been a whirlwind for Laufey, the jazz-inspired pop artist who first rose to fame on TikTok. Her debut on the red carpet of the Met Gala cemented the singer’s celebrity status not only in the world of music, but also in that of fashion. For this momentous occasion, Laufey wore a pink dress by Nepalese-American designer Prabal Gurung’s eponymous label. After performing in two concerts last weekend at Radio City Musical Hall in New York (with Gurung himself in the audience), Laufey looked radiant and serene in her gown as she ascended the Met steps.
The look was a collaboration between Laufey herself, Gurung, and Laufey’s twin sister and creative director, Junia Lin Jónsdóttir. With its princess silhouette, floral fabric embellishment, and blush tone, Laufey’s dress was a perfect fit for the Met Gala’s theme, ‘The Garden of Time’, which references a short story by JG Ballard.
Laufey’s ethereal veil was also a nod to the theme, subtly decorated with the notes to a Bach fugue, a kind of melody played by both a character in the Ballard story and by Laufey’s mother. With the copious ruffles of the skirt contrasting beautifully with the silken bodice, Laufey was truly a ‘goddess’ on the red carpet.
