A stylist’s guide to wearing swimmers beyond the beach

By Eliza Sörman Nilsson

No towel necessary – this season, swimwear hits the streets. Daring bathers with slits and cuts paired with relaxed suiting makes a big splash

“Swimwear is no longer just for the beach,” stylist Julia Brenard firmly states. For Vogue Scandinavia’s June-July 2022 issue, the stylist envisioned swimwear worn in an urban environment as daywear.

“[Photographer] Claudia Kneopfel and I had a vision of our model running through this environment, not constricted and her clothes allowing her to do this,” she explains. “A modern piece of swimwear whether a one-piece or a bikini teamed with a sporty flat and this season's tailoring in neutral or bold bright colours was the look of choice.”

The fashion editorial came to life in Paris's Grenelle neighbourhood, however, the trend doesn’t just exist on the pages of Vogue Scandinavia, it’s one that - thanks to the likes of Saint Laurent and Versace - begs to be worn this summer.

So how do you make it work? Brenard is adamant about finding the perfect tailored suit to go with your swimwear of choice. She then suggests looking for a one-piece in a graphic cut. “This can make a real statement with daywear,” she says.

“Look for opposing textures, a lurex or shiny nylon with a wool suit for example,” she adds, while suggesting that “a high waisted trouser or cargo pant with a bikini top is a great way to style the trend and gives a strong contrasting silhouette.”
