AW22 is shaping up to be all about bright flashes of colour strategically placed on fresh skin and little else other than a brushed-up brow. SS23, however, is aiming for the polar opposite vibe. If the recent catwalks are anything to go by, we're going to be dabbling on the dark side so why not get ahead of the curve and channel your inner goth girl this Halloween.

To be frank, not everyone wants to embrace full-blown skeletons, zombies or vampires complete with freakishly real-looking blood for Halloween. That’s not to say you don’t want to steer your makeup away from every day predictability. It’s more about giving a nod to spooky season by teasing a chic gothic look.

This year, look no further than Versace SS23 for inspiration. Described by Vogue US as being “like a wedding in a mausoleum”, Donatella Versace laid down the gauntlet for “gothic goddess” beauty. Deep plum and cooler purple shades dripped off models' mouths while others including Bella and Gigi Hadid sported dark metallic purple wings that smoked around their eyes and stopped the look from being too dark and gritty.

Versace teamed up with Pat McGrath Labs to create the runway looks. To recreate those fierce purple wings start by using the brand's Legendary Wear Velvet Kohl Eyeliner in the waterline for an inky, full-bodied lash line. Then layer the Violet Vixen eye shadow from Dame Pat McGrath's Mthrshp Mega: Celestial Nirvana Palette.

Bella then upped the ante by showing up to the after party wearing a black long-sleeved dress with a plunging neckline from Versace's SS23 collection. Dark pin-straight hair, black nail polish and the makeup she sported on the runway hours earlier only crystallised the witchy mood.

The goth girl theme continued at Dior, which was inspired by Catherine de’ Medici, the French Queen who was credited with introducing corsets and Italian lace to the French court.

Think heavy rings of Diorshow Kohl eyeliner, elongated and smudged out, set against virtually bare skin. Don't worry about drawing on perfect lines – simply use a Q-tip to make the edges sharper.

Pair with a lace corset for a Renaissance meets modern goth vibe.
