Kick the next twelve months off in the right direction and give your home the energy audit it needs

A new year is here and in order to really embrace the 'new year, new me' mentality, a fresh start must begin with an ending. This can take the form of cleansing out the past, in order to make room for what’s about to come. And the perfect place to start is your home nest, the place where you want to seek sanctuary and respite from the stresses and strains of the exterior world. So why not begin with a complete clean slate and try an energy cleanse for your interiors.

When we head home after a busy and long day at work, we need our interior space to feel like a warm, welcoming blanket, wrapping around us safely. This means that everything we have at home should channel positive reactions. In this manner, it’s key to surround ourselves with things that we love, and ditch anything that we associate with negative feelings, or, in practical terms, is broken.

“All our things at home are vibrating with energy,” explains Charlotte Hagelin, the author of the book Mindful Home. “Over time, we create emotional memories with the things around us and our memory is stronger if several of our senses have been involved.”

One way to evaluate which items to keep and which should go in a cleanse is to take note of something and examine how it makes us feel. “When we look at something or hold it in our hand, we will quickly value it with some help from our memory, and that feeling affects us. A positive memory can help us raise our vibration and energy, whereas a negative one might make us uncomfortable and lower our energy,” suggests Hagelin.

And yes, it’s certainly very easy to collect and hoard things when it comes to our homes. We’re all guilty of letting our toiletries pile up and our clothes go unaudited. But when we don’t do regular refreshes of our personal space, it can leave the energy feeling stagnated, like a fine layer of dust has settled upon your life. So before we add anything new into the mix, it’s important to do a bit of an inspection.

“When we have too much at home and our things pile up, an energy stagnation is created,” says Hagelin. “This applies to all spaces at home, such as the closet, drawers, boxes, shelves, and pantries. Even your phone, computer, and email inbox might need a cleanse to get rid of information and apps that you no longer need,” recommends Hagelin. And don’t think you can just shove things in the basement storage either, adopting the classic ‘out of sight, out of mind’ mentality. Everything we own impacts us, so this is the time to really grapple with that bulging cupboard or overflowing drawer that we’ve been ignoring for the last few months.

So how to make it work for you? There are some very simple ways to boost the positive energy in your home, according to Hagelin:

  • Do the dishes and ensure that the sink is kept clean.
  • Always close the toilet lid.
  • Make the bed with clean bed linens.
  • Take a minute to keep your hallway tidy and cleaning as that will give you a nicer welcome when you come home again.
  • Dedicate a few minutes each day to clean out old paper and other unnecessary things you don't need to stop it piling up.
  • Leave electronics outside of the bedroom in order to decrease the exposure to electromagnetic fields.

And if you’re still struggling, consider bringing in the experts, such as energy worker Jeanette Johansson, who specialises in creating harmonic home environments through energy work. “A professional energy cleanse takes about two to four hours and gives you and your home a fresh start,” says Johansson. The ideal and effective time to utilise someone like Johansson is not just as the New Year beckons, following a period of illness, grief, separation, or even a burglary works too. It can really help to re-establish a sense of safety and security in your home. Easy ways to do this include very straightforward means such as cleaning the walls with warm water and sea salt, burning natural incenses, such as dried sage to release any negative energies, and even vacuuming thoroughly.

“Energy cleansings can also help clear and solve old patterns, habits, and blockages, which can help you move forward in life and create any changes you might want. You become more susceptible for change when old, stagnated energies resolve and disappear, and in addition to a lighter and more uplifting feeling at home. I have had clients that have experienced transformations like new career paths, better relationships, and improved quality of life after an energy cleanse at home,” she says.
