Backstage with Gestuz: The Scandi take on 2000s beauty fever

By Sofia Ferreira

The Danish brand kicks off Copenhagen Fashion Week by proving what we already knew: mastering trends is a matter of calibre

Love it or hate it, the consensus is that 2000s aesthetic is back and not going anywhere for a while, across both fashion and beauty. For the former, we see metallic fabrics, mini lengths and low waists; while the latter is all about sleek ponytails, mid parts and tanned skin with an almost sweaty glow. But if you think this look is too far removed from the classy and minimalistic Scandinavian style, Danish label Gestuz has proven you wrong.

Kicking off Copenhagen Fashion Week, Gestuz was the second show to grace the runway today with makeup by Heidi Wessel and hair by Anne Sofie Begtrup, who perfectly integrated the brand's disruptive spirit into the catwalk beauty. Begtrup's take on hair saw some models with their strands pulled in high, sleek and spiky buns á lá Bella Hadid, while others rocked loose naturally textured hair, with almost mullet-like shaping.

Wessel's approach to makeup was all about translucency, with thin layer of foundation letting highlighter rays through – enhancing the natural look of sun-kissed temples. The rule here is to be as natural as possible, almost recreating a post-workout (sweaty) glow, with a modern touch. On the lips, different shades of cool undertone nudes made a nod to the aesthetic of browns in makeup – a classic of the 2000s. As a final touch, bare eyelids and eyelashes were base for chunky pairs of sunglasses that adorned the models' faces.
