Exploring in and around Skåne’s most picturesque peninsula Kullaberg

By Matilde Wergeland

Back from the summer house, but already planning your next travel destination? This area of south western Sweden is definitely one to look to

With its quaint and postcard pretty villages, an astonishing culinary scene, and dramatic nature of steep majestic cliffs with breath-taking sea views, the peninsula of Kullaberg (reaching from Helsingborg at the bottom all the way up to Mölle and Arild on the tip) has been a beloved destination all year round among Scandinavians for centuries.

However, it is still often overshadowed by other popular regions nearby, such as the Swedish West Coast or Österlen, on the other side of the county, and not as crowded, even though it is home to some of the best kept secrets in the country. World-class shopping, secluded beaches, stunning hotels and delectable restaurants are scattered all over the region. So we've done the hard research and created this guide rounding up the very best for you spots for you to visit.

One of the peninsula’s most picturesque villages, Arild, has been frequently visited by tourists since the 1850’s and the hotel Rusthållargården was founded already back in 1892. Wrought iron details and the original stone wall in the main building contribute to its historic flare and charm, but the family-run and owned hotel (now on its fifth generation of owners) has been renovated several times over the years and offers everything from an exquisite rooftop bar, a gorgeous spa area and yoga studio, along with an outstanding barbecue buffet and beautiful private villas with balconies overlooking the little fishing harbour.

In addition to Rusthållargården’s own incredible restaurant, another must in the area is an evening at family-owned gem, Strand Hotel . Be sure to book a table in advance since the space is limited in this charming old villa, and ask for their own version of the classic Toast Skagen which is to delectable. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, then a fika at one of Sweden’s most quaint cafés, Flickorna Lundgren, where visitors flock to for homemade “strawberry saft” and freshly baked pastries, needs to be on your itinerary. Old copper coffee pots and their signature floral porcelain grace the tables, which are all sweetly decked out in checked cloths. Be prepared for long lines to the straw-roof house (the signature style for old houses in the county), and make sure to order their salmon plate or the shrimp sandwich if you’re in the mood for a delicious lunch as well.

Leaping from Arild further west towards the tip of the peninsula and Mölle, you'll find Kullaberg’s nature reserve with striking paths for hikes along the coastline and among the beech trees. Don't miss Kullen’s lighthouse before heading to Grand Hotel Mölle, where you find charming rooms with jaw-dropping vistas over the ocean. Take a stroll in the harbour, check out the charming café Brandstation and watch the boats bob along aside the pier. Tasty homemade pizzas and ceramic souvenirs can be found down in the village at Mölle Krukmakeri – two places you'll definitely want to fit in to your travel plans.

Slightly bigger, yet still charismatic, Höganäs is another village further south on the peninsula that shouldn't be skipped. Check in at Skåne’s most stunning Bed & Breakfast, Fröken Hjort, where a renovated traditional “Skånelänga” is home to a handful of rooms. The owner Sebastian will care for you as if you were old buddies and prepares a homemade breakfast buffet each morning including eggs from the local farmer and freshly baked bread rolls. You will find modern design furniture mixed with rustic antiques in the large living room where floor to ceiling windows offer a view over the peaceful meadow and rolling fields.

Two amazing sightseeing and food options in the area are Krapperup Castle and Salthallarna where you find curated shops, art installations, and various restaurant options. And just around the corner is Blå Hallen which is another must if you visit during summer – a wonderful melting pot for art, antiques, fashion, and food. Swing by one of Sweden’s most famous tomato farmers, Vikentomater, on your way home and sample delectable tomatoes in all shapes and colours.

For the perfect mix of laid-back charm and a little buzz, head a further south to Helsingborg where you can experience both tranquil strolls along the water, as well as exclusive designer shopping. Drop your bags at the classic and lovely Clarion Grand Hotel (located right by Stortorget) or at the gorgeous The Vault Hotel, an old bank turned into an extravagant, luxury hotel with the most stunning lobby and lavishly designed rooms. Another option is one of the newest pearls in town, Clarion Hotel Sea U, where you find impeccable rooms, several restaurants, as well as rooftops with both a bar and pool. Get ready for one of the most comfortable sleeps you've had in a long time, a sumptuous breakfast buffet and a new favourite dish, the “Spicy Tuna Salad” from their rooftop restaurant, during your stay.

And if you're bored of reading your book or sightseeing for that matter, but still fancy a spot of relaxation, then be sure to schedule in a class at the yoga studio, Raw Yoga, located inside Hotel Sea U. Nourish both your body and mind with a session in their cozy shala downstairs, or experience an unforgettable class with the exceptional view from the hotel’s outdoor terrace (weather permitting). Carry on your health journey and peruse the nutritious lunch buffet at Ginger Hälsobar, followed by a mandatory raw food treat, the perfect post-yoga pick-me-up.

If you're after something a little more substantial after all that exercise, then grab a bag of their homemade soft caramels (the chocolate flavoured ones are the best) and head just across the street to the chocolate factory Chocolatte where homemade pralines and chocolate bars can be found on the shelves. You've earned it after all. Once fuelled up with both nutrients and treats, you’re ready to hit the town, which is, despite its relatively small size, home to some incredible shopping gems.

Visit Circus, Charming, and Malama Traders, the ideal spots to find some new additions for both your wardrobe and home. And one of the brightest stars in the whole country when it comes to women’s fashion is The Gallery Shop. Scandinavian favourites such as Totême, Stylein, By Malene Birger, and Acne, mixed with international designers like Vince, Grifoni, and Sea New York grace the hangers. Thanks to the knowledgeable staff and stylists working there, it will be a challenge to leave empty-handed.

End the day at one of Skåne’s best restaurants, Sillen & Makrillen. Relish their fresh seafood dishes (we're having the fried scallops with bleak roe and cauliflower cream), freshly baked focaccia, thirst-quenching cocktails, and mouthwatering desserts on their terrace as the sun sets on an unforgettable trip...
