Prince Nikolai of Denmark is every inch the modern man, despite the Danish monarchy being one of the oldest in the world

Prince Nikolai of Denmark is not your average royal. The Prince is known for breaking traditions: whether it’s his star-studded modelling career or his lack of royal salary, Nikolai does things differently. Here's how the Vogue Scandinavia cover star is doing it his way.

He likes his privacy

Although his face is all over Instagram, the Prince’s social media is famously private. Unfortunately, this means there are countless imposter accounts on the platform trying to capitalise on his fame. He’s also a star on TikTok with videos of his modelling clips (on other people's accounts) racking up millions of likes.

He seems content with keeping a low profile himself however, and has said that his classmates at school in France "don’t know and don’t care" about his title.

He uses regular transport

When the Prince arrived in London for his Vogue Scandinavia interview, you’d be forgiven for thinking he’d have pulled up in a chauffeur-driven car with an entourage in tow, or alight down the steps of a private jet.

But the royal travelled light, opting to take the Eurostar from Paris instead.

He does his own grocery shopping

While studying in Paris on his semester abroad from Copenhagen Business School, Nikolai has opted to do his grocery shopping himself, partly so he can practice his French. In his Vogue Scandinavia interview, he remarked that sometimes he sees magazines featuring him and his family whilst browsing for food in his local supermarket. Not that they end up in his basket though, he prefers to keep a low profile when out and about.

He doesn’t take a salary from the Queen

Breaking tradition from most Royal Families, the Queen of Denmark changed protocol in recent years to mean only the Crown Prince can take a salary for Royal duties rather than the rest of the family as was previously the case.

This makes Prince Nikolai’s modelling career all the more important as it’s now his main source of income.

He’s the face of Dior

Throughout history, many royals have been the muses of major fashion houses but not many have gone on to become the faces of brands. Prince Nikolai began modelling a few years ago and is now the face of Dior menswear - he also still is a regular feature on catwalks having recently closed Rains’ menswear show at Paris Fashion Week.

His mum still cuts his hair

Although his hair is one of the most well known curly mops in fashion, Nikolai recently admitted it’s his mother Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, who cuts his iconic locks.

He might be seventh in the line of succession to the Danish throne, but Prince Nikolai is breaking traditions and leading the way for this pack of new modern royals.
