This weekend Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is set to ascend the throne. In celebration, Vogue travels 20 years back in time to remember their 2004 nuptials

No royal wedding has thrilled quite like the union of Crown Prince Frederik and Mary Donaldson. The world watched on in wonder as a real estate agent from Tasmania encountered her Prince Charming in a chance meeting at a bar during the 2000 Sydney Olympics, fell in love with him, wed him and became Australia’s first ever real-life princess. The couple announced their engagement on October 8, 2003, following Queen Margrethe II’s blessing, and Frederik proposed with an emerald-cut diamond ring flanked by rubies. The couple wed at Denmark's Copenhagen Cathedral on May 14, 2004.

As she arrived at the cathedral, it was revealed Donaldson had Danish designer Uffe Frank make her dress. Made of an ivory duchesse satin, the skirt was lined with 31 metres of tulle, giving it the voluminous appeal of a ballgown.

In a nod to her Australian heritage, Donaldson’s bouquet featured a flowing trail of eucalyptus, as well as roses and a sprig of myrtle from Fredensborg Palace. It would later be laid on her mother’s grave in Scotland.
