Meet Christina Iversen, the ceramic artist who went viral for her timeless seashell cups seen in the homes of Scandinavian tastemakers
There is a big chance that while browsing on Instagram you have come across unique ceramic seashell cups that seem to be in the houses of all the stylish Scandi influencers. With the likes of Mathilde Gøhler and Pernille Teisbaek, Danish ceramic brand Christina Iversen Studio is currently taking over Instagram with its ceramic tableware and seashell cups – better known as the konylie koppen.
The story of Christina Iversen Studio started more than two years ago when Christina Iversen was on her daily walk at the beach near her house in Aarhus where she found a beautiful seashell. “I have always had a thing for the beauty of seashells, and the sea in general,” explains Iversen. “I enjoy daily walks by the beach and swimming in the ocean, all year round. I call it ‘havterapi’ - sea therapy.”

Being a hairstylist for many years, Iversen was at a turning point in her life longing for a change. “When I found this specific seashell, everything clicked. I have always had a passion for ceramic, design, and great craftsmanship. I decided to take it to my favourite Danish artist and ceramicist Dorte Kristoffersen and asked if she would like to help me create a ceramic seashell cup.” Iversen first made two pieces, one for a friend and one for herself. She posted a picture of her new creation on Instagram after which it took off quite quickly. “People were really interested in the design and asked where I bought it. That’s when I realised this could potentially become something bigger. In February 2021 I decided to launch my own studio.”
Now, the cup has found its place in the homes of many influencers and other tastemakers. “So many lovely and skilled people have one of my cups and for that, I’m forever grateful and extremely proud. I think the seashell cup is well received because it brings people closer to nature, peace, and balance. There’s something special about drinking coffee or tea from a beautiful cup, the perfect balance between beauty and functionality. I have received many wonderful messages from happy customers in the past year. Several of them tell me that they can almost hear the ocean when they sit with their cup and enjoy their drink. There’s no doubt in my mind that nature has a strong positive impact on us all – especially during these more difficult times.”

Iversen is currently working on establishing a bigger production line and expanding her collection with ceramic shell plates and a saucer in addition to the cup. “People in and outside Denmark have shown great interest and I would love to be able to accommodate that. I dream about creating a universe of products - ceramics, textiles, and other lifestyle products based on ‘wellbeing’. Because I truly believe it is something we all need.”
