Swedish-Somali singer and songwriter Cherrie took part in the barrier-breaking performance, featuring a 70-plus piece orchestra made up entirely of women of colour
A gorgeous musical performance featuring Swedish-Somali artist Cherrie took place this week. 74 women of colour gathered in orchestra to deliver a new rendition of Alicia Key’s “If I Ain’t Got You.” Led, of course, by the award-winning artist herself.
For Cherrie, it’s a dream come true. On Instagram she wrote, “I’m so proud to be a part of this,” before thanking Keys for the occasion. One that was arranged to celebrate the song’s 20-year anniversary, and the premiere of Netflix’s Bridgerton spin-off “Queen Charlotte.” The show, which premiered on 4th May, is quenching fan’s Bridgerton thirst between seasons, a big part of which are the classical interpretations of charting songs from the last decades.
The icon and songwriter has topped charts with her own tracks and put Swedish R&B on the global map with her collaborations. The inclusive performance is especially close to her heart, as she wrote her premier album Sherihan about and for women and life growing up as a woman in Rinkeby.
In the video which you can watch below, Keys and her orchestra can be seen donning Victorian-era garments in true Bridgerton fashion, and it is breathtaking. The classical interpretation of the track, the performance, and, almost most of all, the inclusivity of the gathering. The warmth is palpable, seen in the joy of all these women of colour performing the beautiful anthem together.
