In a celebration of contrasts, By Malene Birger launches minimalistic jewellery juxtaposed to their usual bohemian silhouettes. We speak to creative director Maja Dixdotter to learn more

Known for embracing eclecticism, tomorrow Danish brand By Malene Birger expands its universe beyond ready-to-wear, launching its first jewellery line. Spearheaded by creative director Maja Dixdotter, the jewellery is a natural extension of the brand’s contemporary take on free-spirited silhouettes and Scandinavian minimalism.

The pieces are simple and refined, constrained in their expression. Bulbous cuffs, earrings, necklaces and rings in 925 sterling silver and 14-carat plated gold nest neatly over the brand’s signature knits and silk shirts. “Everything we create must serve an authentic purpose in the wardrobe of the By Malene Birger woman,” says Dixdotter.

Very much about layering, the jewellery is meant to juxtapose the many textures in tonal colours and muted maximalism. Operating out of its Copenhagen headquarters, the brand curates collections of creative chaos – eclectic, organic, and bold.

Jewellery is an exciting new avenue for Dixdotter, she explains as she expands on the difference between working with cloth compared to metal. “It’s more like moulding,” she says. “You create a shape that will remain compared to garments that always changes a bit depending on the body wearing it.”

Sustainability is another crucial factor in the brand’s design ethos. “It is our responsibility to make conscious choices, and we’ve been working hard – and will continue to do so – to make real and substantial changes to reduce our environmental impact in everything we do,” Dixdotter explains. She expands on what it means in praxis, saying that “we do everything from smaller collections, moving production closer to home, implementing a preferred fibre tool to guide our material choices and depend on 3D sketching to reduce overproduction.”

Rounding up, Dixdotter says that “we are far from perfect and have a very long way to go, but our goal is to embed transparency and responsibility into everything we do.” From ready-to-wear to jewellery, By Malene Birger is all about a more sustainable future.

The collection launches on November 18th on bymalenebirger.com and across the brand's retail stores.
