From tailoring to the 2000s, these are the biggest AW22 trends to get your hands on, according to the buyers of Scandinavia’s most stylish fashion stores
Fashion keeps on giving. If you have followed the recent shows and collections for autumn/winter 2022, you'll surely agree. Mannish single-breasted jackets, taffeta skirts, and the already iconic white tank featured on Kaia Gerber, Hunter Schafer, and the likes at Prada. Multi-pocket hunting jackets and rubber boots alongside tweed short suits at Chanel. Necktie-graced workwear at Louis Vuitton that served for one of the loudest applauses of the recent fashion month. 80s-inspired après ski looks with a tinge of sporty Americana at Ralph Lauren.
While we are patiently waiting for the collections to hit stores, it can be tough to navigate the plethora of trends for investment buys once the initial dopamine rush has subsided. Specifically, when you are just knee-deep in spring. But fear not, Vogue Scandinavia has got everything you need to know from the buyers behind four of Scandinavia’s leading concept stores. Read on for the cult buys of the upcoming season and trends with longevity to know now.
Consider this your essential fashion forecast of AW22 trends that we will be wearing in the season ahead:
All suited up
Our return to the office calls for a stylish suit. "Either you go all the way 'Annie Hall' with a blazer, suit pants, necktie, and waistcoat or you choose one or two of the mentioned key styling items for a low key version of this tailored, androgynous trend," says Olivia Seth, head of buying at APLACE in Stockholm. "The necktie is probably the main ingredient of the look and the easiest one to procure: you will most likely find a coffer full of them at your nearest vintage shop.”
If a necktie is just a tiny detail too much for you, Seth recommends: "Get one good suit, and you have countless outfit possibilities. Style it over a classic shirt, tank top, or with nothing at all, with sneakers, sandals, and high heels. With the jacket buttoned, unbuttoned, over your shoulders, tied around your waist.” There is no doubt a suit will solve all your styling aspirations in a moment and will stand the test of time no matter the trend.
Glamourous adventure
Scandinavian winter can feel like an outdoor expedition at times – which plays into our hands this season. The outdoor trend is here to stay. "If we look at the collections, we can see a straightforward transition from indoor to outdoor dressing, against the backdrop of returning to the office. It is a melding of elegant, tailored garments with downright functional fashion – like you want to dress up and be forearmed all at once. Take a voluminous Cecilie Bahnsen dress and match it with padded outerwear and chunky rubber boots.
"Layer a silk-satin slip dress from Nanushka with a sporty Proenza Schouler White Label long sleeve, trekking sneakers and top it up with some drop earrings from Vermeer Studios,” explains Tine Falk from DM in Copenhagen. “Moonboots will make a huge comeback in this setting. It will all be about everyday fun with a hue of alpine hiking glamour in the city.”
2000s goes minimalism
Attentive fashion connoisseurs know the noughties have been making a comeback for a while – only to be in full bloom in the upcoming season. As Piiu Malkavuori, buyer at Beam and Beamhill, in Helsinki, punctuates: “The 2000s will not only be a thing for trendsetters anymore, it will be seen in how people style the clothes. Since people still want to dress timelessly, it will probably be somewhere in the mid-grounds of the 2000s trends and Scandinavian minimalist style. We will see outfits where a classic, timeless trench coat seamlessly meets a pair of low-rise jeans and a sculptural handbag that might have a familiar silhouette from earlier decades.”
New classics
Timelessness remains a big buzz word not only in the sphere of vintage but in getting dressed and consuming fashion in general. “The trend turns toward ‘less is more’. As opposed to buying lots of trend-driven pieces that you can only wear for one or two seasons, quality and longevity are becoming essential. It is about going for the new classics: timeless pieces that you can style in many ways, that you want to have in your wardrobe forever – make it your very own icon and be playful with it,” says Tine Falk from DM.
“I think the brand H2OFagerholt is a fantastic example of how to pair the comfortable with the more extraordinary. It could also be a buoyant dress from Sabina Sommer or statement boots from Miista. Anything goes as long as it has the potential to become a lifelong companion.”
Half undressed
Bra tops, ultra mini skirts, cut-outs, mesh fabrics, and lots of bare skin might sound like a round-up of the current season while it is a sneak peek of AW22 at the same time. “Miu Miu set the tone with their micro skirt for SS22. This upcoming fall, we will see this revealing look even from the Scandinavian designers who are usually a bit more prude,” says Olivia Seth from APLACE.
“The mini skirt bonanza continues, and in combination with the cut-out trend, it might seem a bit cold for the Scandinavian fall and winter. My styling tip to not freeze to death is to choose one, or two, body part(s) to uncover, whereas you cover the rest with something warm. Combine a mini skirt under a full-length coat or match a crop top with a more covering skirt.”
Eva Katrín Baldursdóttir, head of buying and owner of ANDRÁ in Reykjavik, confirms: “The mini skirt will return to our wardrobes – as a key ingredient on the runway at designers like Nanushka, Stine Goya, and The Garment, it can be styled with an oversized shirt and jacket, but also for a more relaxed look with a bomber and boots or sneakers.”
