Baum und Pferdgarten - SS23

By Josefin Forsberg

From the recurring print to the show's location, time is of the essence at Baum und Pferdgarten this season

In the cyclical world of fashion, looking back is often a way to predict what's coming next. And for spring/summer 2023, Baum und Pfergarten found its starting point in the concept of time. Pairing up with Skagen Watches for a small capsule of timepieces and jewellery, "the collection was inspired by the overall concept of time," as co-creative directors Rikke Baumgarten and Helle Hestehave explains. "How you spend your time and how you 'take time out'." Emblematic of the timeless theme, a specially developed print of chains and watch faces was reinterpreted in a multitude of ways in the collection: on shining blue crepe dresses, crisp white cotton shirts and shorts, and translucent organza statement pieces.

Always referential, the creative team dipped into the fashion of recent decades to further explore the concept of time. Injecting modern sensuality in the collection, a quintessentially 1990s denim corset top has us mimicking Paris Hilton's 'that's hot' . A patchwork crocheted mini skirt with retro sensibilities has us relishing in the 1970s homemade craft-core of it all, while a boxy jacket reminiscent of the 1940s with workwear detailing is luxuriously revamped in minty brocade. Seen in the leopard print and swim-coat silhouettes of the 1960s, crochet knitwear of the 1970s, and the mini-minis of the 1990s, the many references found in the collection went beyond historical costume to be re-envisioned with a Baum aesthetic for 2023.

In a mash-mash of historicity, bright pink terry cloth sets with swimwear bottoms were spotted alongside a 1920s organza dress with puff sleeves and a reworked empire waist, covered by postage stamp emblems calling out “Coucou de Paris” ('Hello from Paris'). "We once dedicated a full collection to Charlotte Gainsbourg," Baumgarten and Hestehave said ahead of the show. "This season we thought of, what Charlotte Gainbourg would wear if she was a Gen Z kid. It would be timeless pieces but way more bold."
