In a re-envisioning of Georg Jensen's famed Daisy jewellery, Stine Goya partners with the Danish silversmith for a colourful collaboration. Here the designer give us an exclusive look
“The daisy line is something very iconic both for Georg Jensen and for Denmark,” Stine Goya tells me over video chat. “I remember seeing the jewellery in my grandma’s home. It’s a common gift here.”
While at first glance, the two brands are intrinsically opposite. The silversmith’s sleek lines and minimalist expression are a counterpart to the playful and eclectic aesthetics of Stine Goya. “That’s what I found so interesting. How we came to merge the two brands in this collaboration,” says Goya.
The original Georg Jensen Daisy jewellery was created in 1940 to celebrate HRH Queen Margrethe II’s birth. Inspired by a brooch gifted to Crown Princess Ingrid when she married Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark on the 24th of May 1935 – a memento to the bride’s mother whose nickname was ‘Daisy’ – the Georg Jensen line became a national symbol of hope during wartime. Ever since, the daisy-shaped silver jewellery has become a favourite for generations of Scandinavia women.
It was always about the Daisy, from the very first conversation I had with Ragnar,” Goya says of the collaboration. “She was the perfect designer to help give Daisy a fresh new look and colour palette,” says creative director of Georg Jensen Ragnar Hjartarson. “Together with Stine, we specifically chose these beautiful shades because of their timeless appeal. Colours you can wear and enjoy for life, and that won’t go out of fashion.”
The Danish designer – whose colourful universe has come to define a new wave of fashion in the Nordics – explains how she would rummage through the Georg Jensen archives on the hunt for inspiration. “I’d stop and look at these lovely jewellery boxes made for when the line first launched,” she recalls, speaking on the process behind the collaboration. “I was most in awe of discovering that each petal is painted by hand. The craftsmanship is incredible.”
Stine Goya’s iteration of the iconic jewellery line is softer than the archetype. “I rounded out the petals when I drew my version of the daisies,” she explains. “I wanted to see how much it could change without overriding the original. I think when collaboration on something that has been around for so long, it is really important to respect where it comes from.”
Looking at the collection, it is reminiscent of a meadow, the flowers layered on top of each other in organic shapes. “I adore the statement necklace and the ear cuffs. You can mix and match the different colours,” Goya says. After five rounds of working on the palette, Goya landed on more muted shades than usual. The collection comes in two colourways: one softer version with peach tones and creams and greys and one that looks at greens, blues, and pinks. “I’m so specific with colour. It’s all about balance; one can’t dominate the others in the combination,” she says.
The Stine Goya x Georg Jensen collection will be available from the 15th of March on georgjensen.com and stinegoya.com
