Like in previous years, this year's most show-stopping Oscars fashion moments happened at the after-party. Read on for the low-down on the best looks of the star-studded night
When the Oscars fashion mood is “modern Old Hollywood”, there’s not much room for jaw-to-the-floor looks. By the Academy Awards, we’ve seen every super-snatched hourglass silhouette Daniel Roseberry could cinch together in the Schiaparelli atelier, and rolled our eyes at all the vintage remakes which, despite their good intentions, still pose a sustainability issue. The Oscars after-parties, then, are when all bets are off and the real fashion begins.
In previous years, this has meant naked dresses. Lots of naked dresses. But, in a fashion first, stars seem to have listened to those (us) calling time on the acres of skin always on display. Emily Ratajkowski, for example, wore a directional Jacquemus bridal look, Cardi B was swathed in inky Atelier Versace spring 2003 lace, Kylie Jenner came dripping in blood-red Ludovic de Saint Sernin beads, and Kim Kardashian showed that simple is often the most impactful in pearlescent Balenciaga.
It was a game of vintage one-upmanship as stars, from Jennifer Lawrence to Margot Robbie, out archived one another, versus those snapping up fresh-off-the-runway autumn/winter 2024 looks, like Rebecca Hall and Maude Apatow waving the flag for British designers Erdem and Richard Quinn, respectively. Kendall Jenner, meanwhile, proved that John Galliano’s recent viral Margiela Artisanal looks are, in fact, wearable in a major coup of the night.
Our personal best-dressed? We couldn’t possibly say, but those who acknowledged the brief was a night to celebrate film, not their workout regimes, stood out for all the right reasons. Scroll on for more…
