Shine on, you crazy diamond, in looks that are stoned and sequinned. Frocks that are fit to party, totally shimmery cardis and even denim get the sparkle treatment
Now is not the time to stay in the shadows. This season’s hottest aesthetic is a return to old-school glamour and full-on shine. These are looks to make a magpie gawp, with glitterball pieces and dazzling sequins worthy of Studio 54 - a trend not for wallflowers but for spotlight stealers. Nevertheless, there are different ways to sparkle and wear the glittering trend for everyone, whether it’s head-to-toe shimmer or just a glittering trim.
Those inclined to fully arm themselves in after-dark glittering chain mail, can look to the runway for inspiration. Unsurprisingly, Halpern, king of the disco aesthetic, showcased some stunning shining suits in deep purples and reds this season. Gucci likewise doubled-down on its reimagining of the 1970s, with a boudoir-worthy gown in fizzing peach. Their effervescent aqua blue dress with puff sleeves is the ideal way to adopt the trend, as is Stella McCartney’s slip dress- in primary blue crystals and red sustainable silk. Despite the exuberance of sparkly fabrics, there is a mature sexuality to this trend that echoes Tom Ford’s velvety liquid sequin pieces- from the iconic football jersey dresses of 2014 and svelte red-carpet gowns to this season’s bright separates in burnt umber and fuchsia. Channel this in Balenciaga’s sensual sequin mini or Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini’s Halston-esque cut-out dress.
For daytime wear, embroidery and embellishment are a subtler way to adopt this trend, like the sequin knitwear of Brunello Cucinelli’s mauve bomber or the lightly-dusted crystals on Eytys’ jeans. This understated shine is no less impactful, and it is all about how you wear it. Team Gucci’s sequin embroidered wool turtleneck with paired-back denim for a more relaxed vibe, or pump up the volume with Schiaparelli’s frantically intricate silver embroidered trousers. Equally, Oséree’s glittery lilac bikini set can be slinked underneath tailored trousers and a loose cardigan for some expertly executed day-to-night dressing. Area’s ostentatiously embroidered crystal silk crop top paired with black separates is another understated – though no less effective- nod to the trend.
If your sparkle vibe is more magpie adjacent than baiting the disco limelight, there are ways to dip your toe into this aesthetic. Rhinestone trims are a discreet and cheeky way to shine, and can add a sense of disco to even the most traditional of looks. Take Louis Vuitton’s tactile tailcoat jacket; a piece of classic tailoring given the Dolly Parton treatment. Or, turn to Versace’s black georgette jumper and satin skirt. Teamed together, they work as a classic co-ord but get a sparkling update with their fluorescent glitter trimmings.
Of course, the most delicate trimmings are the most traditional of all – jewels. The icing on any look is a dazzling selection of stones. Go for the finest crystals in the land, and adorn yourself with Swarovski ear cuffs or some diamond bangles from Tiffany’s, pavé necklaces from Bulgari or the brightest diamonds from De Beers. Shine on.
