Responsible for the effortlessly chic looks that Alicia Vikander has been consistently serving at Cannes, Paris-based stylist Victoria Sekrier talks us through each enviable ensemble

Oscar-winning actress, Louis Vuitton darling and Vogue Scandinavia cover star Alicia Vikander has returned to La Croisette to present her latest project, Firebrand. And while the film, which is touted as a Henry VIII flick with a feminist twist, is already garnering positive buzz in the wake of
last night’s premiere, we’re here to discuss something else of great importance: Vikander’s Cannes looks. Over the past several days, there was a nary a red carpet, photo-call or celebratory meal at which Vikander did not absolutely slay.

The woman behind Vikander’s looks is Paris-based stylist Victoria Sekrier. In fact, Sekrier has been responsible for the Swedish actress’ most memorable fashion moments over the past eight years, crafting that enviable, Louis Vuitton-heavy aesthetic (she even styled our aforementioned
Vikander cover). “Alicia has such a strong awareness of herself and what works for her and what she feels good in,” says Sekrier. “I can work around that and select things I know she’ll be drawn to. I would say she’s pretty consistent.”

This is the second consecutive year Sekrier and Vikander have taken on Cannes. However, last festival, at which the actress was promoting Irma Vep, she and her stylist took a “deliberately opposite” approach to the red carpet and its surrounding activities. Sekrier notes that last year’s looks were more “structured and embellished” while this year was more about “femininity, flowing lines and air”. “It shows this versatility she has within herself and her style,” Sekrier says. “She merges these very feminine, elegant, understated moments with very fashion-forward moments.” Hours before Sekrier dashes off to Isola Bella for the Louis Vuitton Cruise show, she breaks down each and every major Vikander fashion moment at this year’s festival.

What: Toteme
Where: The annual Charles Finch Filmmakers Dinner

“[Toteme's founder] Elin Kling is a really good friend of Alicia's and Alicia is very supportive of her friends, so we pulled this dress as an option in case there was an opportunity and that opportunity came. It was styled with Aquazurra shoes and Repossi jewellery. What I like about it is it’s a €450 dress worn with €100,000 worth of jewellery – it’s so crazy. It feels quite contemporary to mix high and low and it’s a nice statement that you don’t need to be clad in the most expensive designer clothes to look chic and elegant. You can literally buy that dress right now. That’s something I would like to do more with her in the future.”

What: Louis Vuitton pre-fall 2023
Where: Firebrand photo-call

“Oh, she looked incredible. I mean, she’s looked incredible all week but this is really stunning. It’s a very LV dress and it’s a very Alicia dress. It’s two worlds perfectly merged together.”

What: Louis Vuitton spring/summer and pre-fall 2023
Where: Press day

“Here she’s wearing a corduroy straight-leg pant with a little broderie anglaise cardigan and Repossi jewellery. The weather has been really disappointing, so it’s good to have a really comfortable look. When it comes to these long press days, we opt for things that are more comfortable. It’s really cosy but still chic and elegant, and since it’s light colours it still feels Cannes. I just like it.”

What: Khaite
Where: Supporting husband Michael Fassbender at a cocktail party and attending the Firebrand dinner

“Khaite is one of our favourites. It’s very Alicia – understated, cool, well-made. It’s more expensive than Toteme but it still feels very contemporary. The off-the-shoulder body is counter-balanced by the jeans, but then the jeans have these studs, so on paper it seems really simple but there’s a lot of detail. It’s a great look for evening. We’ve paired it with Ana Khouri jewellery, so again, mixing a more contemporary look with high jewellery in a way that doesn’t feel random. She likes to dress down – her personal style is very understated, very effortless and this is very in line with her identity. It’s a zoo in Cannes – people are literally in feathers. So it feels like a breath of fresh air.”

What: Custom Louis Vuitton
Where: Firebrand premiere

“Look number 27 was my favourite in the Louis Vuitton fall collection – it feels very mid-2000s, but not in the Y2K way. The skirt had that same embellishment. When we were seeing sketches we were just instantly drawn to this gown. It felt perfect. It’s very different to last year, but it’s also very her. And she wore Louis Vuitton high jewellery.”
