Jan Håfström's famed alter ego Mr Walker is stepping out of artwork and into your wardrobe thanks to this clever new collab with Swedish label A Day's March
Mr Walker is the plain clothes alias for comic book character and superhero The Phantom. He is also the enigmatic, and at times mysterious protagonist, heavily featured in artist Jan Håfström’s oeuvre.
Born in the late 1930s, Jan Håfström is regarded as a father figure in Swedish pop art scene. Gaining notoriety early on, the artist has made art since the 1960s, his work has been displayed in institutions and biennales throughout the globe. The artist employs figurative and abstract painting, along with sculpture, wall reliefs and larger site-specific works in his practice. Mr Walker creates agency through movement and purpose in the artists paintings as well as sculptures, the character represents several facets within modern society, and questions both the male image and intention.
Always dapperly dressed in the paintings, Mr Walker is currently the inspiration for a limited-edition series of overcoats, in blue and red, by Swedish fashion brand A Day’s March, which launches on January 27. Accompanying the signature coats is a small capsule collection including T-shirts, sweatshirts and tote bags.
Clothes have been an important element throughout the artist's practice, “For as long as I can remember clothes and fabric have figured in my paintings and objects. At one point, after seeing scraps of fabric on the floor, I started gluing them onto the canvases. This created a certain charge within in the work, because in the end these were parts of my own clothes,” Håfström tells me. “It also gave tactile quality to the work; it was as if the fabric represented me in the work… a fascinating discovery.” Alluding to his process, the artist explains, “I believe this was the foundation for the collaboration with A Day’s March. Fashion and art affect one another, they touch… the zeitgeist they epitomise is the common denominator!”

By answering questions including the ever present; ‘who am I, where am I going’, through his work, Håfström likens seeking, and finding, comparable indicatory answers in fashion as he does in art. "As in art, clothes can be about similar things. It’s about being present. Here and now. Becoming part of the flow of time, part of an ongoing conversation."
Founded in 2014, A Day’s March is a testament to the evolution of Scandinavian design; elegant, sustainable, and accessible fashion. The brand's three founders are avid consumers of culture, which lead them to this latest collaboration and capsule collection.
"The project with Jan Håftsröm has been a dream of ours," explains co-founder of A Day’s March Stefan Pagréus. "It’s easy to enjoy Jan’s work. The artwork speaks directly to you, and when you scratch the surface and delve deeper there are endless dimensions to his visual language."
In tandem with the launch of the collaboration, two separate exhibitions, with never seen before works by Håfström from the artists personal collection, will be on view at A Day’s March store, as well as at Bar Brillo in Stockholm.
The two exhibitions featuring work by Jan Håfström are on view from the 27th of January to the 24th of February at A Day’s March Stockholm location, Kungsgatan 3 and at Bar Brillo, Taverna Brillo, Sturegatan 6, in Stockholm.
