From well-kept vintage gems to uplifting colour ways, here’s how to elevate your cabin according to the experts. Artist Constance Tenvik, content creator Rikke Krefting Ulstein and more show us around…
Given the Scandinavian devotion to hygge, their deep-rooted cabin culture makes perfect sense. Besides celebrating the dreamlike Nordic nature, these cozy getaways debunk the much-hyped concept of Scandi minimalism. The Norwegian take is called Hytte – simple wooden cabins merging functionality and warmth.
Below, we draw inspiration from the Norwegian style set’s very own hytte interiors.

My family has this lovely cabin with a grandiose view overlooking the sea. The nature there is the main thing, I always find peace when I’m there. We have a bonsai-like tree leaning over the cabin which always grounds me, together with the relaxing sound of the
sea.
I like when my surroundings are lively and tell a story. I infuse colours that I enjoy, and put books, artwork, and small objects on display. Our hytte is a place combining relaxation and care, with the main focus of gathering loved ones and having a good time. I don’t hold back on getting furniture from auctions, purchasing second hand or sourcing from my uncle’s basement. Designers Guild is a favourite for wallpapers and fabrics, and for functional pieces I go to Pillivuyt. I do love a good plate or cup from Ginori as well.

I am lucky to have different cabins within the family. The latest addition is located in the Skeikampen mountains, just a two and a half hours from Oslo. Surrounded by beautiful forests, waters, and highlands, this cabin is inspired by outdoor nature and its natural colour ways. Its interior is best described as mountain-chic, with dark wood detailing, stones, and muted leather tones. There’s definitely a mix between old and new – classic items that I will keep for a long time are mixed in with playful pieces to create a grounded space.
We have a Melt chandelier from Tom Dixon placed in the very heart of the cabin. It brings everything together. Someday, I would love to add a big dining table with classic Bollo- chairs by the Norwegian designer Andreas Engesvik.

To me, a visit to the cabin is the perfect getaway. Our family cabin is located in Hovden and we've had it for 38 years. My mother decorated it back then and to this day, all furniture remains the same, which I love. Here I recharge my batteries, take a minute to enjoy the surroundings, and essentially just slow down. One day I might give it a little decorative touch of Jorun, but for now, I really enjoy the ambiance for what it is.
Generally, I like the minimalist aesthetic, I always want my home to create a strong sense of zen. Once I invest in new pieces, I opt for quality furniture that lasts for a lifetime, preferably in timeless, neutral colourways. For brands, I like to add a bit of Menu, Gubi, and &tradition.
Rikke Krefting Ulstein
I love to infuse a touch of colour in my cabin. Since I spend way less time there than at home, it’s easier to be bold and opt for colour. Although my summer cabin is mostly white, I add light blue and turquoise details for an ocean-like contrast indoors. The winter cabin is filled with kilim pillows which bring out the cosy vibe.
I like to invest in both new and preloved furniture. My go-to designers, which also influence my London and Oslo homes, are Mario Bellini, Marcel Breuer and Pierre Jeanneret. Their designs are remarkably timeless, all creating pieces that have been sought after interior gems for decades straight.

I do like an authentic and original hytte targeting a simple lifestyle, preferably full of rare antiques. Right now, I spend a lot of time in my family’s hytte, but if I were to invest in my own, an ocean property would be key. Add a bit of vintage goodies from France and a
cosy couch and we’re good to go.
To me, vintage is the go-to pick since I’m always on the hunt for those special pieces. Besides visiting flea markets and vintage shops, I use finn.no a lot. While Kollekted By and OsloDeco are my favourite Norwegian interior stores since they’ve got all the best brands.
