January is officially behind us, so it's time to reflect on the year so far and the music that has shaped the start of 2022. Here, Vogue Scandinavia's music expert, Doris Daga, rounds up the top tracks
We've managed to make it through the doom and gloom of the first of two winter months in 2022. In times of solitude and sub-zero degree winds, we turn to the arts to feel something other than the melancholy we are all currently facing.
Music allows us to escape, and to dream away to the warmth that is beginning to feel like it is on the horizon. So, how has 2022 shaped up so far in terms of music? From the stellar Euphoria soundtrack to a surprise mixtape from FKA Twigs, it's time to take a look at the best songs of 2022 so far.
Tove Lo "How Long"
I did not think we get more obsessed with Euphoria, but here we are. Swedish Pop queen Tove Lo released the title track to episode four, titled How Long. A song about unrequited love gone dark over a synth-based beat, this perfectly captures that teenage angst we are hooked on week after week, setting the bar high for the sonic influence Euphoria will have over the next few months.
Gunna featuring Future, Yung Thug "pushin P"
One of the most exciting releases of this year so far, Gunna dropped his album DS4EVER to critical acclaim. The single, pushin P is equally charming, confusing and catchy at the same time. With 45 million streams already, pushing P's layered simplicity ensures this will be one of those tracks that will be hard to get sick of.
Lana Del Rey "Watercolor Eyes"
Another song from the Euphoria soundtrack, this is Lana Del Rey in a nutshell. As the days of 2014 Tumblr are returning, Del Rey's track is the perfect sound to accompany the revival. What feels like an unreleased song from her Ultraviolence era (one of my personal favourites), this speaks to our Lana fanatic hearts.
The Weeknd "Sacrifice"
The Weeknd's record Dawn FM is safe to say going to be one of the most memorable of this year. Following up the hit record After Hours, The Weeknd dropped a guide to the afterlife, narrated by Jim Carrey and heavy synths. The single Sacrifice was made by none other than the Scandi pop elite, namely Swedish House Mafia, Oscar Holter, and Max Martin. Put this song on repeat and listen to history happen.
FKA Twigs featuring The Weeknd "Tears in the Club"
"I'ma drown in the beat now" is all I had to hear to know this was going to be added to every playlist I've ever made. From FKA Twigs' surprise mixtape Caprisongs, Tears in the Club is unusually pop for Twigs, but unmistakenly her. With the help of The Weeknd and an extraordinary track that feels both heavy and ethereally light at the same time, this is one of Twigs' best records so far.
Charlie XCX featuring Rina Sawayama "Beg For you"
We've chronicled our love for this record before but it is not often 2000s Scandi pop is revered at this scale. Beg for You is an upbeat, classic pop song to cure the February gloom and doom, Beg for You is an invitation to dance your heart out. Catchy, addictive, and already viral on Tiktok, the grip this song has had on the final days of January is just the beginning.
